These spicy air fryer chips (fries) are one of my favourite things to make in the air fryer. They’re quick, simple and delicious even without the spice mix, though the seasoning really lifts them. They’re a family-friendly favourite and a great way to get kids excited about a homemade side or snack.

The beauty of this method is that the spices are added after the chips are cooked, so everyone can season to their taste. Serve them lightly salted, spiced up, or plain alongside your favourite dip. They pair with almost any main—pizza, grilled chicken, wings, fish, steak or burgers—but they are equally satisfying on their own as a crunchy snack for movie night or an after-school nibble.
Ingredient notes for spicy air fryer chips
See the full recipe below, but in short you need just a few ingredients:
- Potatoes – waxy or all-purpose varieties such as Maris Piper or King Edward work well.
- Oil – a neutral oil such as sunflower, vegetable or light olive oil.
- Seasoning – a simple blend of salt, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne and dried oregano. Aim for roughly one part salt to two parts spices and herbs. If you prefer, use a pre-mixed potato or chip seasoning.

How to make spicy air fryer chips
To get crisp, well-cooked chips each time, follow these key steps:
- Peel (or leave the skins on) and cut the potatoes into evenly sized chips. Avoid very thick pieces so they cook through.
- Rinse the cut chips under cold water, then soak them in fresh cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch. This helps them crisp.
- Drain and dry thoroughly on a clean tea towel or kitchen paper.
- Toss the dry chips in a little oil so they are lightly coated.
- Cook in the air fryer for about 15–20 minutes at around 195°C (or your air fryer’s automatic fry setting). Shake the basket a couple of times during cooking for even browning.
- As soon as the chips come out, sprinkle the spice mix and toss to coat. Serve immediately for the best texture.
Can you reheat them?
Yes. Reheat chilled chips in the air fryer for 4–5 minutes to warm and regain some crispness. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat the next day the same way.
What if the chips are not cooked through?
If chips are underdone, simply cook them a few minutes longer. For future batches, cut them a little thinner so they cook through more reliably.

Are air fryer chips crispy?
Air-fried chips generally won’t be quite as crunchy as deep-fried ones, but they will crisp nicely on the outside while staying tender inside. Cooking smaller batches and not overcrowding the basket helps achieve better crispness.
Can you cook them in the oven?
Yes. If you don’t have an air fryer, roast the chips in a single layer on a baking tray at 200°C for about 30 minutes, turning once. Add the spice blend after roasting, just as you would with air-fried chips.
