This sauce uses very few ingredients and is naturally low in carbs, yet it’s big on flavor. It pairs beautifully with seafood, but also works well with roasted vegetables, fish, or grilled meat. You can easily adjust the heat — make it bold and tongue-tingling or milder to suit your tastes.
How to prepare the 1-Minute Sugar-Free Sharp Cocktail Sauce
As the name suggests, this recipe comes together in about a minute. Simply combine the ingredients and stir. Below are a few tips to help you get the best possible result.
If you need to save time, prepared horseradish from a jar will work. Keep in mind that many commercial preparations contain additives or sugar, so fresh horseradish is preferable for a clean, bright flavor. Freshly grated horseradish takes only a few seconds and brings superior flavor to this sauce.
Grating fresh horseradish is quick: it can be done in about half a minute, leaving the remainder of the minute to add the other ingredients and mix. Mixing itself takes only about ten seconds.

Note: horseradish is a pungent cruciferous vegetable and can upset sensitive stomachs. If you prefer a gentler sauce, reduce the horseradish from two tablespoons to one tablespoon or less.
If you have time, refrigerate the sauce for a few hours or overnight — the flavors will meld and deepen.
To prepare the sauce:
- In a small to medium bowl, add 1 1/2 cups (350 ml) sugar-free ketchup.
- Add 2 tablespoons finely grated fresh horseradish.
- Stir in 1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.
- Season with 10–15 drops of sugar-free hot sauce (or to taste).
- Mix thoroughly, taste, and adjust lemon, pepper, or hot sauce as needed.

Once mixed, cover and chill if possible. Refrigerating the sauce for a few hours or overnight enhances the flavor.

Serve chilled alongside shrimp, fried seafood, roasted vegetables, or as a zesty condiment for grilled meats.

How I came up with the 1-Minute Sugar-Free Sharp Cocktail Sauce
Cocktail sauce is a classic accompaniment to seafood, traditionally made by combining ketchup or chili sauce with horseradish. Commercial versions are often loaded with sugar and additives, so I developed a cleaner, sugar-free version that keeps the vibrant heat of fresh horseradish and the sweet-tang of ketchup without unnecessary ingredients.
I first shared this recipe on social media several years ago and have been making it often since. The main idea was simple: use a sugar-free ketchup base, freshly grated horseradish, a splash of lemon, a bit of black pepper, and a few drops of hot sauce for extra punch.
I experimented with alternatives like plain tomato purée sweetened with erythritol and raw apple cider vinegar, but the sauce came together best with sugar-free ketchup and fresh lemon juice for brightness. Worcestershire sauce is sometimes used in traditional recipes, but because many commercial Worcestershire sauces contain gluten or other ingredients I avoid, I left it out and relied on lemon and pepper for complexity.

How to vary the Sugar-Free Sharp Cocktail Sauce
The sauce is flexible. If you like the sharper tang of apple cider vinegar, you can swap the lemon juice for a small splash. Use any sugar-free, additive-free hot sauce if you prefer a different brand or flavor profile.
For a creamier, European-style version, stir in a little mayonnaise. For a richer, boozy twist, a splash of whisky can be added to taste.
General prattling
Life feels unusual these days, and I’m grateful that my family has stayed healthy. I had planned to spend time in Greece working on my next keto book but decided not to travel given the uncertainty. Instead, I’ve focused on writing, testing recipes, and spending time at home.
With schools closed, homeschool routines have become part of our daily life. Teaching my son has been rewarding and challenging in equal measure, and I enjoy incorporating music and creative projects into his lessons.
Work continues alongside family commitments. I’m also developing recipes for a small line of chocolate products in collaboration with a manufacturer; those trials will likely continue through the spring.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my work and recipe posts. Stay healthy and happy cooking.
